The Boudhanath stupa ( spiritual monument) is the largest in Nepal and a very important place of pilgrimmage for Buddhists, especially refugees from Tibet. Centuries old, its origins are unclear but it's mysticism and religious significance is evident by the pilgrims that come to spin the prayer wheels. Surrounded by temples, shops, and buildings, it was a highlight of Kathmandu.

The stupa is topped by a square tower bearing the seeing eyes of Buddha on each of the four sides. The nose is in the shape of the Sanskrit numeral one, symbolizing the unity of all things. The small dot between the eyes represents the third eye, a symbol of spiritual awakening. Atop the square tower is a pyramid of thirteen steps - the ladder to enlightenment.
